How a race works

No sign-up and no typing. Pick an animal, pick your age group and press Play.

1

Get matched

You are matched with a real child in your age group. If nobody is online within 15 seconds, you race a Practice Rival instead, so you never wait long.

2

Answer 10 questions

Both racers get the same ten multiple-choice questions, with 30 seconds each. Everyone goes at their own speed, so nobody waits for anybody.

3

Win with your brain

The most correct answers wins. If it is a tie, the faster total time wins. Lost? You get an encouraging message and a quick rematch.

Three age groups

You only ever race children in your own age group.

  • Ages 8-9: addition, subtraction and times tables up to 10.
  • Ages 10-11: bigger addition and subtraction, multiplication up to 12 × 12 and simple division.
  • Age 12: mixed operations with larger numbers, simple fractions and percentages.
  • Always whole numbers, and subtraction answers are never negative.

Built to be safe for kids

  • No chat, no friends list, no messages. Racers can only see each other's animal and progress.
  • No typing of names. Every player gets a generated nickname such as "Brave Falcon 42".
  • No ads, no purchases, no tracking. Free to play.
  • No sign-up. No email, no password, no phone number.
  • Honest about data. An anonymous ID and the race results are stored so matching works. See the privacy policy.
  • Grown-ups stay in charge. Links to the web and the "delete my data" button sit behind a question for adults.

Mental Math Race is an educational game for children aged 8 to 12 and is designed to be played with a parent or guardian's knowledge.

Questions

Do I need an internet connection?

Racing a real child needs a connection. Without one, the app still works: you race a Practice Rival.

What is a Practice Rival?

A recorded race from a child in your age group (or a built-in rival if none is available), replayed in real time, so there is always someone to race. It is always labelled "Practice Rival".

What happens if someone leaves or loses signal?

A player who leaves on purpose loses. If the connection simply drops, the race waits 20 seconds before counting it as a loss, so a wobbly signal is not punished straight away.

How do I delete my child's data?

Open Settings, press "Delete my data" and answer the grown-up question. This removes the online race records, the anonymous ID and everything stored on the device. Details are in the privacy policy.
